MPPT Solar Controller

What size MPPT controller do I need?

For many DIYers, how to choose the model of the MPPT controller is very important, because this is not only related to the purchase cost, but also to the normal operation of the solar power generation system. Now I will introduce you how to choose the MPPT controller.

Generally speaking, solar controllers are divided into 12V-48V automatic identification, 60-96V, and higher such as 110V220V380V according to different voltages, the current is usually 30A-300A, the voltage here refers to the battery voltage, not The voltage of photovoltaic modules, everyone should be clear about this.

The most commonly used is the 12-48V automatic identification solar controller. Most of these are used in the home power generation system. How to choose the controller, there are two indicators, one is the voltage of the battery, the other is the charging current, and the charging current refers to is the current that the controller charges the battery.

For example, a customer has a 48V200AH battery and a 2000W solar panel. How does he choose an MPPT controller?

First of all, we determine the voltage. Because the battery is 48V, we can only choose the 48V solar controller. As for how to choose the current, it is actually very simple. The 2000W solar panel divided by the 48V voltage is equal to the current of 41.6A. At this time, we Just choose a 50A MPPT controller, because the MPPT controller above 40A only has 50A, so we choose a 48V50A MPPT controller.

If we don’t know the voltage of the battery and need to determine the voltage of the battery according to the controller, what should we do?

First of all, we need to look at the power of photovoltaic modules and our actual needs. For example, we need to have 12V DC output, or 24V DC output. If there is such a demand, the MPPT controller needs to choose 12V or 24V according to the demand.

If there is no such requirement, we can check the parameter table of the solar controller according to the total power of the components, and select a suitable MPPT controller, because the parameter table of the controller has the parameter of the maximum solar panel power, As long as the MPPT controller maximum solar panel power we choose is greater than our actual solar panel power.

The figure below is the parameter table of the MPPT controller for your reference!
